Search engine traffic without spending

Are there any ways to generate FREE SE traffic???

Written by Tom from Tom's Newbie Booster

Pay per click. Pay per inclusion. Pay per impression. Pay pay PAY!!! While there are a lot of ways you can PAY your way into the search engines and directory, there's still a few good ways to generate that kind of traffic FREE ... EVEN in 2002! If you're on a limited budget, or just don't think that you SHOULD have to pay for search engine traffic - don't despair.

Google - the obvious one!

What can you say about Google? It's become a traffic-giant in recent times and it's still FREE. A listing in Google will also bring traffic from google.yahoo (at the moment anyways!) and from foreign flavours of the search engine too. Google has got a pay per click model / pay per impression system, but they don't detract at all from the power of the free listings. Highly recommended.

Altavista - still free but not easy...

If Google is the shining example of how a search engine can go from zero to hero, Altavista is probably the opposite. It's turbulent history has seen it in the search engine news for one negative story after another. Job cuts, spam and relevancy problems, profit losses, and other hassles (some of which you can read here - http://www.searchengineworld.com/engine/players.htm) have meant that traffic from this engine has dropped to low levels.

Whereas at one time, Altavista 'WAS' Google - and a massive part of any adult webmaster's traffic - these days, it's a shadow of it's former self. But Altavista IS still free to get into, and you can get the odd page or homepage listed there. Worth persevering with.

Meta Search engines

A meta search engine is not somewhere that you can submit to directly. To get traffic from these engines you need to get listed in either say google, Dmoz, or some other database. Once you start submitting sites and pages to the search engines, and galleries and sites to the TGPs and link lists, you'll start to build up traffic from the smaller meta search engines. While this traffic will appear towards the bottom of your referrer stats, and never be in VAST quantities, it IS an important part of building a good traffic base. And again, it's FREE...

Dmoz as a way in...

Another traffic sender and a gateway into some of the major traffic senders such as Google's directory. Dmoz has also had a turbulent history in the adult webmaster world, with allegations of corruption among the ranks of the reviewers, and the notoriously strict rules, rousing mixed feelings from site builders. You'll either love Dmoz or loath it but it's still a major FREE method to build up traffic into your adult site network.

Perseverance and plain old time...

At first, it's going to seem like everyone on the boards and the articles you read are full of BS.

There's nothing more frustrating that building and submitting, and then getting around 1 or 2 surfers per domain each day. That's the time when you want to throw in the towel. Well DON'T! It just takes a long time before traffic kicks in. I've always found that the longer you have domains with pages on them, the more the traffic will build. Google and other engines can find you from listings at TGPs and link lists as I mentioned, and you'll get some nice surprises as well as some disappointments.

OK, here's my current list of search engines (and Dmoz!), including the ones I've talked about here, and some others that might be worth a shot:
