Review of G.A.S.S

An adult webmaster resource...

Written by Tom from Tom's Newbie Booster

I've just invested in a new bit of kit called G.A.S.S - http://www.darksoftcomputers.com/gass/ $45 for 6 months use and updates.

I've experimented with a number of auto-submitters in the past, and was keen to test out G.A.S.S

Not an auto-submitter as such...

To describe G.A.S.S as an autosubmitter is not accurate. This is a tool which speeds up the submission to the TGPs out there. Whereas an auto-submitter takes some details, such as gallery URL, title etc... and then submits that information to a number of TGPs, this product does not. You still have to fill out the forms yourself.

So what DOES it do?

G.A.S.S has 2 main sides to it. Recip management / mirror page generation and the 'Submitter'.

The recip generator takes a gallery and duplicated it in the same folder around 30 times (with 4 recips per page). It then adds on a number of reciprocal links per page. This is certainly one of the strong points of the product. If you've ever had to generate a bunch of mirrors, then this is something you'll enjoy NOT having to do again. The package comes bundled with a collection of recip buttons, and all the code is inserted onto the pages for you.

One useful button was the ability to generate galleries that each had one of your own recip links on there, which could be used to drive traffic to your own TGP, or to a hub or free site of some kind. A text link recip could be used here...

The submitter is simply a page with a list of TGPs running down the left side, with the check boxes to the left of those. These help you keep track of where you've submitted. When you've checked off a TGP after submission, the TGP turns yellow - which is very handy. Right clicking the TGP name opens the TGP in it's own window. This is handy because you can open up a number of windows at a time and make the most of even a slow connection.

Submitting...

If you're used to submitting manually to a lot of TGPs, then I think this will be an extremely useful tool for you. When you duplicate the pages, you get a text file of information which then needs to be added into each of the TGP's submit forms. It's clearly laid out, and makes it hard for you to submit the wrong mirror to the wrong TGP:

Very handy!

The good thing about G.A.S.S is that because you're submitting by hand, you can see which submissions are successful, and correct any slight problems. Most large TGPs do not like auto submitters so G.A.S.S also gets around that problem. Although the submission process still took around an hour (using G.A.S.S's pre-configured database of TGPs) it was relatively painless.

They do recommend that you get an additional tool, and I used dropit for this purpose. Roboform is recommended on the site, and I might try that on the next submission run.

The database of TGPs on the version I used seemed very up-to-date with only one or two submissions failing. This was a far-cry from the 50% or MORE failures I've experienced with other submitters. It looks like there are regular updates available (something that is crucial to a good submitter's success...) There IS a facility there to edit the database yourself and this is a lot simpler than editing the database of an autosubmitter (a you don't have to deal with matching submission information to form fields). Even a novice should be able to master adding in their own choice of TGPs.

Newbie Friendly?

As for ease of use, G.A.S.S was more simple than the previous submission software I've used. It was literally a question of downloading the software and then filling out the information on the duplication page. I didn't even bother with the tutorials. Even if you're very new to submitting with a software tool, I'd say that you should be able to master G.A.S.S in around half an hour...

Another feature on G.A.S.S was that you can save your progress during a submission run and come back at another date. This is handy for someone like me who starts to climb the walls after filling out around 100 submission forms.

Drawbacks?

It's hard to fault G.A.S.S because it's not a tool that claims to do anything that it can't or be anything that it isn't. It's a simple and efficient aid to a task that can be very fiddly and time consuming to say the least. You will still have a lot of work to do when you're submitting but this tool will certainly take some of the sting out of the tail.

Please note - I have no affiliation with this product or with DarkSoft.
