Making money from webmaster referrals

Even if you're very new to making adult sites and pages, there's no reason why you can't start making money using some of the ideas I'm going to look at in this guide. As you'll no doubt be aware, one of the major ways to make money on the adult web is by sending surfers on to a sponsor's Paysite, and getting them to buy a porn membership. (There's more information on sponsors over at the Adult Webmaster Glossary: http://www.adultwebmasterglossary.com/#Sponsor) As well as making $$ from surfers, you can also make money by sending other adult webmasters to sponsors.

Why we're important

Adult webmasters (yup - you and me) are important to sponsors - both new ones and experienced ones. We're in demand! As far as sponsors are concerned - there's just not enough of us. Sponsors offer many bonuses and unique selling points to tempt us into promoting their range of paysites. Competition is fierce between sponsors. To that end, they offer incentives to webmasters already promoting their sites to get other people to do the same. There's similar schemes offline too - I got some gift vouchers for referring a friend of mine to the TV company I use. But the good thing about sponsor's referrer systems is that we're not talking gift couchers; we're talking hard cash.

How it works...

The amount you'll be paid, and what you'll be paid for, varies from one sponsor to the next. Common systems include:

A one-off fee of around $200 for each active webmaster you send.
5- 10% of all the money their surfers spend (or a similar percentage).
Earn a percentage of their on-going sales.

The important thing to remember is that if you refer someone, they still get 100% of their sales. The money you make comes out of the sponsor's pocket. The system will perform exactly the same for the person who signs up under your referral than it would if they had just signed up themselves.

How to start earning from referring webmasters...

Chances are you've already signed up with a number of sponsors? Cool. It's more than likely that the sponsors you're using will have a webmaster referral scheme. Look around on their homepage for details of what you can earn and also read the terms. If there's anything you're not sure of, email the support staff. Most of the 'mega sponsors' (who offer many different paysites) have a webmaster referral program in place today.

Linking to a sponsor itself is no different from linking to a Paysite from one of your sites or galleries. You link to a website address which is unique to you. It has your special code in the URL and anyone that signs up with the sponsor after clicking on that link will credit your account with the referral. The link code should be within the 'link codes' area of the sponsor's member's area. Log-in and hunt around. Once you've got the URL, try linking to it from a simple text link on one of your pages. Click it and see if it works OK. (You won't get into trouble for doing this).

How can I get people to join up under me?

There's a number of effective ways to get interest in your sponsor, and to get webmasters to go and take a look around what they have to offer. Here's some of things you might think about:

Here's a good example of such a page - http://mj4f.com/online/ Note the small images at the base of the page. Move your mouse over them and you'll see the referral code pop-up in the status bar of your browser. This is a good example of a page which gets interest in promoting your sponsors from 'new recruits ' - people who might not be sure what the adult web business is all about yet.

You can target three groups of webmasters with your referral links:

1) People who don't know anything about adult webmastering... but who might be looking for a new way to make money.

2) New adult webmasters who might be looking for good sponsors.

3) Established webmasters (you never stop trying out new sponsors / areas of income that could work).

'Thank you' pages

If you have ever submitted one of your sites someplace, you've probably been sent to a 'thank you' page which confirms that you've submitted your info. This is an ideal place to talk to other adult webmasters. If you've got your own TGP, link list - or basically ANY page that other adult webmasters will see - use it. Put on some links that are honest and say things like, "Here's a sponsor that you can make more money with..." Or tell them about what appealed to YOU about this sponsor... Use your special url to link to the sponsor and get some referrals like this.

Chat boards and forums

If you read any of the adult webmaster boards out there from GFY to TNB, Netpond to WOD - you'll see people using either their taglines or signatures to tell you about their sponsors. (These are small links which you can add to the base of each message you post). This is a very effective way to get other webmasters interested in your sponsors, and to link to them with your referral link. There's nothing wrong with doing this, and most of us are only too happy to use someone's referrer code when we sign up for a new sponsor.

Building a resource

Another way you can get people to click your referral link is if you've got something that other webmasters could be interested in. This could include:

Some specialist articles.
A bit of software.
A script.
Some content.
Some links that could help someone.
A review of some kind.

Once you've been making sites or pages for a while, there could be a resource area that you can think of that's not been done yet. Well - build a resource area and add some referral links in there.

Summing up

I wouldn't say that it's easy to make a fortune from webmaster referrals, but if you're not using them - you're sure to be leaving cash on the table. When you're working on the web every dollar is important, and learning how to refer webmasters is just another way to increase the money you make each month.
