Finding Great Domain Names Part 1
Domain Name Analyzer Tutorial
This is the second tutorial I've written which uses the excellent freeware Domain Name Analyzer (DNA for short) software. The first thing to do is to grab this free tool at the link below:
http://www.findgoodnames.com/
It's available for Mac and for Windows too.
This is a tool which helps you come up with domain names which you can then go and register. It also checks hundreds of domain names at a time to see if they are still available. (Remember that every domain name can only be owned by one person at a time). This tool is normally the first port of call each time I want to find a new domain name.
When I first downloaded DNA I couldn't make head nor tail of it, and couldn't see what all the fuss was about. It was only some time later, after I'd learned how to use it's features that I really got into it. This tutorial will seem like it jumps around a lot - and it might be wise to run through it twice because we'll be performing certain tasks and then going back to look at what it is that we've done.
I'll break the tutorial into two parts as there's really two distinct halves to using the software effectively. Today we'll be GENERATING the domain names, and tomorrow I'll cover the batch checking and some other handy features of DNA.
PART 1) Constructing domain names
1) First of all start the software up. It should be in the usual place other programs are added to. I'd also add a shortcut on the desktop to this tool also. It's very handy.
2) Next click on the small red lightening symbol at the very top of the page. It looks like this:
You'll now have a window which looks something like this:
Take a good look at this window because you're going to spend a lot of time here.
This is the main part of finding good names takes place. It's important to understand what each part of this window does, so I'm going to go through it one bit at a time.
Let's start with the very right of this window as this part is very straight forward:
Here you can choose what kind of name you look for: .com. .net and so on. In most cases, you'll be able to find an amazing .com name with this system and in all honesty I've never needed to change it from a .com. But if you'd like to dig out another kind of name, this is where it happens.
Now let's look at the center of this window:
There are two windows here which will more than likely be blank if you have just installed the software on your computer. If there's anything in there when you install the software (like some default mainstream words) clear them out and start from fresh. Now let me explain what these two boxes are.
You have to give the software a list of words to work from. In each of these boxes you need to type adult related words. You have to put one word per line and whatever you type in here, once you've clicked OK, will be saved forever. You can add to these boxes as time goes by and as you think of new words to add in here.
The difference between the two boxes are that the words in the LEFT box are words which will go before. And the words in the RIGHT box are words which will go after. That probably doesn't make much sense just yet - but it will! Let's do a quick experiment here which will explain what these two boxes do.
Enter the following words into the box on the LEFT:
sexy
hot
horny
And then enter the following words into the box on the RIGHT:
movie
picture
pics
So we've now got three words on the left and three words on the right.
Now let's jump up and look at the top of the screen for a second:
This box is where we are going to add in a keyword to do with the domain name. Add in "amateur" in this box for now.
Then go down to the BOTTOM of the window to this area:
Uncheck everything except for the last box, as I have done here.
Now press OK and you'll see somewhere on the screen this list of domains:
Now things are starting to look interesting. So what has happened here? Here's what the software has done for us:
Took the keyword we gave it, 'amateur', and added .com onto the end of it.
Took the words from the LEFT box and placed them BEFORE the keyword, and then added .com on the end, giving us:
sexyamateur.com
hotamateur.com
hornyamateur.com
Took the words from the RIGHT box and placed them AFTER the keyword, and then added .com on the end, giving us:
amateurmovie.com
amateurpicture.com
amateurpics.com
... which gives us a total of SEVEN domain names which we might want to check.
Now it has taken us a long time to get here - so what's the deal with this software? Isn't it quicker to do all this in a WHOIS search? Press the red lightening symbol again.
Add "wives" in the keyword box at the top of the page, and then press OK again. BOOM! We've now got the following list of names in front of us:
amateur.com
sexyamateur.com
hotamateur.com
hornyamateur.com
amateurpicture.com
amateurphoto.com
amateurpic.com
wives.com
sexywives.com
hotwives.com
hornywives.com
wivespicture.com
wivesphoto.com
wivespic.com
So the beauty of this software is that it takes your two mini databases of words from the left and right in the two boxes, and builds domain names as shown above. It can also be set (via those boxes we unchecked earlier) to add in hyphens to the names.
Picking the 'before' and 'after' words is the real art to getting the most from this software. Use your common sense AND the Overture Suggestions tool to find some of the words that you could put in here. If you spend a few moments playing with the TNB niche miner tool - Niche Miner Tool - you'll get some other good ideas. This tool works in exactly the same way as the domain name generator in this software.
