cyberwurx sells domain names through cwnic.com. IF you email them when you sign up for hosting, they MIGHT give you a "deal" with cwnic. otherwise, a GREAT domain registrar is namecheap.com. remember, you will have to point your domain to your host's nameservers. its VERY simple to do. if you have a problem doing so, i'm sure someone will assist you. AND - fwiw, i - personally - would always shy away from godaddy for either domain names or hosting.

Hi
I think I figured out the FTP process, I hope.
Looks like I can't go any further with learnig and practicing it until I get a domain and hosting.

Going to use Cyberwurks $2.99 plan.

Does it matter where I buy a domain name, I see Cyberwurks doesn't sell them?

susan, RE: message #299987:

Hi Susan. Dont worry about getting the settings in your ftp correct. There's only 3 or 4 bits of information you need, and the hosting company tells you this when you sign up. If its a bit confusing and you are not sure what goes where, ask them or us. Believe me, its easy, and once setup it doesnt need changed.

As for free hosting, forget it. Starter packages come for as little as $5 a month. If a new webmaster cant afford to invest a mere $5 a month in their future, well, what can a person say

I'll be honest, I have little to no time for someone who cant be arsed investing such a little sum of cash. I'm not saying you are one of those people and I apologise to you if I gave that impression.

So then, invest $5 in your future, open the cheapest account possible with cyberwurx and take it from there. Get stuck, we'll help. And with cyberwurx, if you outgrow your starter account / hosting package, you can upgrade it, without losing anything. Its not as if you have to start again from scratch.

$5, come on, just give it a go. Whats the problem?

i'd shy away from ANY so-called "free hosting" because you get what you pay for...and one day: ALL of your hard work could disappear. plus - you're extremely limited with what you can do with sponsor hosting or free hosting. many "paid" hosting companies offer extremely cheap basic starter packages (some will even give you a free domain name for a year. many of us on tnb use cyberwurx with excellent results. as a matter of fact, i give them (i have no motive for suggesting them, except they are good folks who consistently provide an exceptional level of stability and customer service).

Hi Ritto,

I just wanted to thank you for the reply.

It's good to have an additional perspective on the whole situation and even better to lend a cautious head's up for newbie webmasters who may be reading this site. I guess the lesson learned is: even though a company may be great for years, a change in management (or whatever circumstance it may have been) can still leave one high and dry. We don't -necessarily- have clout or loyalty with the companies we do business with online, although it may seem so despite a long relationship, because of the anonymous nature of the internet. Just a reminder of caution to all.

...and, yeah, if you could have seen the look on their faces when I walked into the building! It looked as if only a few people work there now.

Thanks again... and happy webmastering.

Hi cocky

Its been a few years since I started having bad experiences with CSN cybersexnetwork / tritech. I had a good relationship with them for many years then one day they closed my account. It took a long time to get an answer from them, and basically they told me I was not active enough and they were dumping me. My sites with them were still generating rebills month after month. When I questioned this income, they said tuff luck, we're keeping it, so go away.

I was not very happy with the company and the way they closed my account without any notice or warnings, after maybe 5 years of a happy working relationship with them.

So in reply to your initial question, yes, I'd say they are a dodgy company and one to avoid at all costs. They weren't always like that but I don't know what happened to bring about the change, for the worst.

Lol, I wish I could have stopped by there offices in person I'm in the UK so a bit too far away.

Anyways, good to hear from you

Hi all, speaking of AVS sites, has anyone else had problems with CyberAge/CyberSex/Tri-Tech Internet Services? I've been doing business with this company since they started (before they even changed their name to CyberAge) and made a many AVS sites exclusively for them and we did a lot of business. In recent years, however, they stopped sending checks altogether. It wasn't until I contacted them for basic tax information that I realized something fishy was up... Their online forms were non-functional, their customer service/phone support was probably, no exaggeration, the worst I had ever experienced in my life (borderline threatening to webmasters after only seconds), and the customer-service representative from both CyberAge and CyberSexNetwork repeatedly said things to the effect of "you're nothing, you're just webmasters". I called, wrote, and even stopped by their offices in person and the whole experience, especially in person, had a very suspicious feel to it. I've noticed a few complaints elsewhere online but wondered what the consensus is here at TNB. Since then, I have been wary. I never did receive any information and, despite their online presence, it felt as if the company was out of business. I would not want newbie webmasters (or even AVS customers) to be taken advantage of, as several of us seem to have been. Anyone else have any information? Regards.

Hi I was wondering I used to do Adult AVS way back in 2001, 2002, 2003, I am now in mostly mainstream and starting to apply for some affiliate programs again
they want references , and I mostly only have adult companies,

I cant for the life of me remember the name of this one big AVS company I used to send traffic to back in that time. Is there a list somewhere of large AVS companies> back in those days? Last time I checked in 2008 these guys were still in business, but I cant remember their name ...thank you

i would suggest cyberwurx as a host. fwiw. i have NO monetary motives to suggest them, i've just been using them since i started out in the business (back in the olden days). they have exceptional customer service and support...plus extremely inexpensive "starter" packages.

The difference in .jpg and .JPG didnt seem to matter on my laptop and its looked okay. But once on the server, the difference mattered a lot, and it just wouldn't work anymore

This is because Windows doesn't care much whether a filename or extension is in CAPITALS or in lower case or a mix of both. However, for Linux which is used on like 90% of all webserver, this matters a lot. So best practise is to use all lower case on everything web-related.

When I build a website, where do I save it on my c drive so that I can load it up to FTP?

I have an extra partition on my harddrive where I have stored all my webwork. The directory structure is also an exact copy of the directory structure on my server. So for example if on the server all my websites are on /var/www/public_html/dandy11/my-example-domain.com all my files and pictures are locally stored in D:\var\www\public_html\dandy11\my-example-domain.com

That way, I don't have to worry about changing paths and such when I upload my stuff, especially when it comes to PHP-programming (which I do a lot).

Your ftp-software doesn't (or rather: shouldn't) mind where you have stored your work on your hard drive.

I was also making very nice money around the same years as Boxter, then I moved to making money from MFA (made for Adsense) websites and to black hat spamming methods also - spamming for backlinks, generating automated websites with giberish content, which learnt me a lot from php programming and about automatization in general - I still couldn't understand how could I have built link list free sites and tgp galleries by hand Today I am still making a little money from Adsense (enough to live from in my country - Czech), mainly due to a local SE, which isn't still beated by the Google, which is quite rare, similar to yandex.ru situation at Russia.

I don't want to derail this interesting topic now, but today I have received a check (once again after 2 years) and I am not sure which sponsor sent me this. Whopaidme.com doesn't know also. If you have any idea which sponsor does pay through InterCash, please let me know Thank you.

Hi Boxter

The only way I can stay alive in adult is by specialising in very small niches. Through trial and error I found one that works for me and yes, as an affiliate it still pays. As per always, some sites sell well for a while they tail off, and its a constant battle looking for new sites to promote, especially in a tight niche.

So I'm not ready to say that affiliate marketing is dead, it still pays my credit cards bills, month in, month out. Although I dont spend enough hours a week doing this to earn my living from it

Good to see you here, and I do believe I recognise your name although I dont know if we've spoken before. And doubly good to see you work a lot in mainstream. I have some sites ... lol, another conversation, I may need help and advice

One small point that will avoid frustration. Name everything in lower case (small letters). This includes the file name AND the file extension. and avoid spaces in filenames.

For example, these are good ...

yourfilename.html

yourpicture.jpg

These are bad ...

YourFile Name.html

yourPICture.JPG

I realise this may be obvious but it can save hours of frustration. I once had a page that worked perfectly on my laptop. But when I loaded it onto my server space (the internet), it would not display the pictures. The html code was calling up an image named picture.jpg but the actual image was named picture.JPG

The difference in .jpg and .JPG didnt seem to matter on my laptop and its looked okay. But once on the server, the difference mattered a lot, and it just wouldn't work anymore, until I spotted the difference changed everything to the same case (ie all to small letters, no capitals).

Hi everyone, I've been an active adult affiliate somewhere during 1998-2004 or something. Maybe some of you remember me by my nickname...

Anyway, moved from adult to mainstream, because there was more money to be made. Since then I've been in the mainstream online marketing market and doing well. What most online marketeers know is that the adult industry was for years leader and most innovative in affiliate marketing. But with the rise of video tube sites and all the free stuff available I have the idea that making money in the adult industry has become quite difficult.

I wonder what the opinion is of some of the oldies here! Is there a future in adult affiliate marketing? And if so, what will that future be like?

Hope to spark an interesting discussion here

Hi Susan

At this stage it probably doesnt matter where on your c-drive that your store your .html files, just as long as you can find them again. When doings things quick, I tend to create a folder on my desktop, and file things there, just so I can get to them instantly. If you share the computer with your brother or anyone else, you might want to find a more discrete location

Yes, file your pages with a .html extension. If internet explorer is the default / normal browser on your computer, then they will open up in internet explorer, as you've already discovered.

Its quite safe to store all your html pages in the one folder.

I would recommend you create a separate folder inside your html folder (the one you storing your html pages in), to store any images in. You dont have to, but it helps keep things a bit more tidy. On a lot of my sites I'll have a folder called img, just to store pics in. You ccan name the folder anything you want, there is no formal rule or anything specific. Just remember that in your html code, when trying to display the pic, you'll need to use the correct path ie tell it what folder its in.

Don't mean to be such a bother.

When I save my sites on note pad as an HTML, they come up as an Internet Explorer page symbol. If I click on it it opens in an Internet Explorer page.
Is this suppose to happen?

Also on C, when I open the main folder "Documents and Settings" there is 3 different my documents folders - owner - all users and my brothers name.

Should I make a new folder in there and label it as susan or webs and put my sites in that folder?

Sorry, trying to get something online so it can be checked out by all of you who want to gie me instructions on what I did wrong or that I should do.

What do I save it as - note pad - word - or as an html document?

Also do I save each one as a seperate item or put them all in a folder I create. Guess I'm trying to ask do I just list each website name as an item in that folder or do they each need their own folder?

Ferroc*sh used to be one of my best paying sponsors, big time. Not now though. I suspect they diluted their niche market by going a little bit on the mainstream. Too gay, not enough sissy. 2 or 4 years ago they hit the nail on the head, but not not now.

Some webmasters had problems with payments from them. I never had problems, they pay me via ccbill, and I've never had a missed payment

I meant to add...while I haven't done anything with the sissy/CD niche...I am always surprised at how well the - using a broad term -- Shemale/TS -- niche has done for me.

Have you heard of the sponsor Ferro?

Much to my surprise...they have not done well for me..and I think their content is darn good. I just haven't been able to be successful with it.

Hmm, my first thought is I dont know much about link lists. Not a lot of experience with them myself.

We don't have to stick with tradition, and traditionally a link list page is a page of text links that when clicked, go to what is called a 'free site'. A so called 'free site' consists of an opening page, followed by an index page, which has links to 2 to gallery pages.

Un-traditionally, a links site could be a page of links that links to sponsor ready made free galleries. That would be a lot quicker to put together, and possibly what you were thinking about already?

My second thought about a link list site is that you would probably need a script (ready made program) to handle the links. You could hand code it, this will work for a short time, but will soon become a pain in the bottom as your page grows.

And why would a page grow? Simple, if you had a page of links that never changes, the surfers will soon get bored and go somewhere else for fresh thrills. So, with any page that is basically a list of links to other pages, you have to keep adding in fresh links, new stuff.

I mentioned previously that I have my own tgp sites. Almost the same as a links list, but it uses thumbnail picture as the links to galleries, as opposed to text links that link to galleries. One of my tgp sites may have 300 links, but they are not all shown at the same time. I may only show 50 or 60 on any given day, and on the next day its a different 50 or 60 links that are shown. So to any casual surfer hitting my site again, it should always look fresh and new, with new things to tempt them to click through.

Its the script that controls that aspect of the site, helping to keep it looking fresh each day.

I don't currently have a links list site script I could recommend. But don't let that stop us And contrary to what I've already said, you don't need a script to start with. It just helps.

Here is one of my current sites. It use thumbnail pic instead of text links, but basically the same idea. The one thing I want to you think about is the mix or balance between the thumbnails (links) and the other advertising on the page. I probably make more from the other adverts than I do from sales from the galleries that the thumbnails link to.

Warning : this is not the average page, please do not be shocked at the content

I'm going to go ahead and start building what I think is close to being a site.
Text only pages is the best way to build (something about 'spiders' can't read images)?

Would like to start with a link list. One of sponsored free site links.
Is it right not to put too many links on it of free content to keep the surfers from not wanting to leave the free stuff they can get right there on my site?

If this is right what would a decent number of links to free sites be?

Should I maybe go with links straight to front pages of movie sign up or galleries to the sign up link?

Not sure if this makes any sense!

-----------------------------------

Can I do "Ok" with just a bunch of link list and have them all linked together?

YES, about the third site I built everything on the page, execpt the background, was linked to a sponsor. If the surfer sneezed and clicked the mouse he was on his way to the sponsor.

I figured out later how to link the background.

Actually, I learned all that stuff right here some 12 years ago.

Yes, there's a lot of reading and learning.

But ...

The sooner you start to put something together, no matter how simple and possibly rubbish, you'll learn about ten times faster. Thus the reason you've been encouraged by another board member here to start, now.

To be honest, I think most of us fell into the same trap, too much reading and not enough doing. The sooner you start the better. Can you tell I'm quite passionate about this? The truth is, its not just an opinion, its a fact.

I can assure you that there's no one here that will laugh or poo poo your first pages. We'll just give you lots of tips and ideas on how to improve your first pages.

Now you've been reading about adult webpages for a while, have you got any idea about what you want to do? A lot of us started off creating one page TGP galleries and submitting to the TGP sites. I tried this and failed miserably. If I was lucky enough to have my galleries listed, I still failed to make any significant sales. So I started my own specialised TGP sites, and every gallery on those sites were my own, lol. That kick started my sales. But I could never get enough traffic to my tgp sites. So I then learnt how to make toplists. My own toplists, where virtually every entry was one of my own, all links either going to one of my own tgp sites or straight to a sponsor. No matter where a surfer clicked, I had the potential of making a sale.

Sorry, that was a bit boring, but it demonstrates how starting off and failing just lead straight on to adapting the idea and doing something else that I had never anticipated in the first place. Now, if I had never started (and failed), I wouldnt be where I am now

Whatever you do, do it. It probably wont work first time. But we'll help make it work. You wont get that kind of positive help on many other webmaster boards!

Bye for now ...

Hey everybody

Haven't been here for a couple of weeks so here are just a coupe of random thoughts to a couple of posts I just skimmed over.

First and foremost: Glad all you guys with health problems are back home and healthy.

Re quit smoking:
I quit smoking ~6 yrs ago after having smoked 40-60 cigarettes a day. For me it was cold-turkey, stopped smoking from one day to the oter. Haven't touched a cig ever since. I'm physically fitter than ever before in my whole life, I cycle ~2.700 km (too lazy to convert this into miles) a year, my weight is finally normal (first time in like 15 yrs), my taste-buds are working again as they should. Having quit smoking was the best damn decision I've ever made in my whole life!

What helped me? Allan Carr's book helped me a lot. I know many people don't like his books but for me it was perfect. I also found that avoiding the usual "smoking-situations" is a great helper. One of my typical smoking-situations was during work-breaks: I walked into the kitchen, drank a coffee and smoked a cigarette. So, I stopped having breaks in the kitchen and went to the living room instead. Also, give your hands and mouth something to do. I must have chewed like half a rain forest in tooth-picks

@Susan
If you're still looking for a good FTP-program, try FireFTP (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/fireftp/), it's a free Firefox-AddOn and you can FTP from within your browser. I find it very easy to use.

Also, put your sites up as soon as you think they are finished (be sure that you have all the legal mumbo-jumbo in place, tho),try to get some traffic to it (ask for link-exchanges on TNB for example), then move on to the next. You will learn and improve your skills as you go so don't try to make your first site(s) perfect. There's no "perfect" in this business anyway.

@SDSimon
You are still marvelous!

IMHO, it's best to get your first site up ASAP.

When we started, we kept changing everything so it would be perfect. It took us months to get our first site up and everything was not perfect. It's was not supposed to be, we were newbies.

Anything that you can put up will allow us to see where you need help. Keep your first site as simple as you can and get it uploaded ASAP. IMHO

The whole idea of the patch and all the other NRT's is to release nicotine into your system, thats the point of it.

But it doesnt give you all the other nasties that you get from a ciggie, the bits that really do you the harm.

And it also helps break the habit of the constant hand to mouth gratification, the link is broken.

So at the risk of offending, there is no way I can agree with your comment "If you are releasing nicotine into your system, you might as well smoke it in." Its just so wrong.

Having said that, getting down to 5 a day is a significant improvement for any smoker

Virtually none of my pages have warnings or such like. Put them there if you want but it will make no difference to sales, and offers no legal protection as far as I'm aware.

Copyright? If you are using a sponsors content they will have their own guidelines as to what you can do with it. Most are pretty reasonable, just so long as you are using their content to promote their site, and not a competitors. That would be naughty And none that I'm aware of (sponsors) require you to put up a copyright. Just read the sponsors rules and guidelines for confirmation.

A number of years ago there was a big fuss about some 2257 thing. Just make sure any content you use in no way could be mistaken for ages that are too young. Common sense applies here.

I always use a .com myself but I don't suppose its absolutely vital. But, you are aiming for a worldwide audience, and for that a .com is the one to go for.

A good idea is to think of two words that go together, like red socks, then check to see of redsocks.com is still available.

Another trick is to add a generic word to what you are really after. So if redsocks.com was already taken, you could try redsocksclub.com or redsocksparty.com

susan, RE: message #299874:

Hi Susan,
A lil preface. I was going to simply answer you questions...but I thought this reply - though a bit long - was best.

FIRST: An inherent problem with plain text ( chat boards et al ) is that the reader has a hard time feeling the same emotions or inflection that the writer intended, so in many cases...what is on the page feels harsh, coarse, cold, negative etc.
When reading this reply, it's not intended to be any of the above....simply what I see as fact and my advice. Sooooooooo, please read and interpret it as just that...what I see within the industry, initial steps and some solutions for a newbie.
I'm not trying to persuade or dissuade you in any way.

One of the biggest blunders - probably the biggest ever - in any business model - was committed by the adult industry.
They started giving more and more away ( unlimited viewing & downloads of hardcore content) - for free - thinking people will still buy the product. As time went on, it got worse and worse as surfers were able to have 100GIG, 500GIG, terabytes of hardcore content on their own computer that they got for small dollars.
I could JO for 3 lifetimes with all that content...how much more content am I going to pay full price?
To make matters worse, a virtually unlimited amount free hardcore content - can now be accessed without even joining a sponsor's site - 24/7 - on the net.
I'm sure Walmart will give me some free lube.

This stupidity worked for a while, but eventually it bit the industry in the ass. Not just a bite really, it took the entire ass and left a big gaping hole.
Liken it to a store telling you to take the sofa, chairs, refrigerators, paintings, TVs, audio equipment ...keep them for yourself... then assuming you'll be back to BUY another sofa.
I'd love to visit that store.
So, with all that said, unless you are feeling exceptionally lucky, to go in the direction of marketing anything other than an under-served niche - hard to find content - or adult items That cannot be gotten for free - IE: phone sex, sextoys, cams
( simply 3 examples ) - would be a waste of your time and money.
Note the word "Lucky" above, it should be in bright red neon letters - if you're not feeling THAT "lucky" - stay away from any niche that is - even remotely - available as mainstream porn.

WHAT TO MARKET? THINGS TO CONSIDER:

Even though a niche/sub-niche may exist,
- i.e. bald females missing a finger, who only ejaculate on outdoor thermometers.
- Is there enough content AND a large enough market to support it?
- What will turn people on?
- What can't they get for free?
- Is marketing content available or - are you able to create your own content - for you to market it?
- Is there a large enough market to support it?
- Are you interested in - and - do you understand and or willing to learn what turn-ons your buyer's seek related to this niche or product that makes them break out the credit card?

It's difficult for an old-timer - let alone a newbie - to market something they are not interested in - it is imperative - that you understand your buyers, and are able market your product effectively to those buyers.
Soooooooooooooo... With the above in mind - do research - carefully consider the niches/areas/products you'd like to begin marketing. Construct your business/marketing plan to work those areas you feel you can effectively master.

TOOLS
...and even found some sponsors to sign up with later that have promo stuff for those niches.
One of, if THE biggest tool you will use, and it's FREE, is creating and using your own marketing (promo) materials. - Your Own Adverts.
Yes, they may incorporate sponsor provided graphics in some form....but the enticing, titillating - make me hornier - text that YOU CREATED - is unique & fresh.
You must hone your creativity to reel in those horny buyers and get them to pull out the credit card.
Surf, pay strict attention to adverts. Do they turn you on? Do they make you more interested in this niche/product?

Take notes on language used, colors, images, layout. Why did this advert get your attention, keep your attention and make you horny/more interested?
Never discount text. An image is great, but humans react to text.
Stimulate your potential buyers.
Keep it simple, not too many words, - Get to the point - use BOLD,UNDERLINE,different colors where they can be effective.

You mentioned FTP. Here are a few popular & free, in no partic. order - to consider:
coreftp.com
filezilla-project.org
smartftp.com/
others may recommend some more.

On to your questions:
......once I figure out that DNS direct thing they talk about.

I suspect the DNS thing pertains to using a 'white Label ' website from the sponsor. White Labels are clones, often quite similar to the sponsor's actual site. They allow you to upload your own logo, change colors and a few other things to make this site appear different/new/unique when compared to the actual sponsor site.
The DNS:
Instead of the white label site displayed on a sponsor's domain, it will appear as though it lives on your own domain.

such as:
susans-orgasm-world.com
NOT
sponsor-domain.com/susans-orgasm-world/

The DNS info - ( Domain Name Server ) is changed - at your domain registrar.
PRO:
White labels are loaded with content, often have groovy bells & whistles for the surfer, are somewhat different that the sponsor's site and are very easy to get up and running in short time.
CONS:
The actual content is basically the same as everyone else. With minor exception, webmaster 1 has the same videos as webmaster 1,000.
Some white labels - can - do ok in the search engines...but they are rarely unique enough to say they are big traffic generators

.......free hosted galleries and sites,....
as above, this is not unique content. Surfers have likely seen this content before. In addition you have none or very little flexibility to change much if anything on the page, such as title, heading tags, text etc.
You are better off to purchase your own content, build the gallery or site yourself and use those juicy STIMULATING adverts mentioned above, that you created yourself.
If you use sponsor created content ( videos,pics...etc ) make your gallery/site unique to the sponsor's gallery/site.

I think the days of the traditional "gallery" and "free site" are pretty much over, but with the right niche/product and creativity, one could still be successful using them.

UNIQUE, TARGETED CONTENT is ALWAYS KING.
Build your own when possible.
Modify sponsor's as much as possible

....is that website in your tag a free hosted site?

It's on paid hosting. That site in my sig. displays multi niche cam options. I keep including Cams in my - can't get it for free - list. The reality with cams is - There is a proliferation of free cams available 24/7.

Fortunately and so far in my findings - with few minor exceptions, they aren't - what even the cheapest of surfers may consider - a 'great' experience.
Although that site in my sig. line shows multi-niche cam options,
I focus heavily on the lesser than vanilla options and combine cams with sextoys.
The 'live' cam interaction, like phone sex, is irreplaceable and magnetic. they have done well for me. Your Mileage may vary of course. ( Thanks BigBear).

FREE HOSTING
The word 'free' and 'hosting' should never be used in the same sentence. For $10-ish to $20-ish a month...you can have your own hosting. maybe others can make suggestions on adult hosting.
Free is never free. The free hosts place ads on your webpages to cover expenses. you have no control over what's shown. In addition, they come and go - literally overnight.
If you begin considering 'free hosting', take your right hand and slap yourself in the head. Don't do it.

....some are pretty interesting niches.

What niches are you interested in? Which sponsors do you like so far?

In conclusion:
Basic minimal HTML page:

</html>

READ - RESEARCH;
make Google/Yahoo your buddy.
Learn basic HTML and CSS.

search keywords:
learn css
learn html
easy html
( etc. ...you get the idea)

It's quite simple to learn the basics very quickly.
Perhaps a few days or a week (to get you started)
Try to find sites that allow you to "practice" online. They show you, in real time, how well you have done...and mistakes made.

hope that helps!

EDIT:
Mr Ritto's post below is spot on about domain name. If I may add - I would NOT suggest using Yahoo Domains nor godaddy.

I like and use namecheap.com - merely a suggestion

susan, RE: message #299880:

Err, the easy way is to invest a few dollars in hosting (cyberwurx or webair) and get yourself a domain. For less than $20 you could have both, and gain valuable experience in setting things up.

Don't worry, its not really complicated. I remember when starting up, I had to ask a really basic question here in TNB. My question was, which do you buy first? Hosting or a domain?

The answer was it doesn't matter.

So find a domain name, the shorter the better, and avoid hyphens in the name if at all possible. Then buy it (anywhere between 10 and 15 dollars for a year), then buy your hosting (maybe about $10 a month, or less).

Then 'add' your domain to your hosting package. The hosting package will give you some dns name server information that you then input into the place you bought the domain name from, so that everything becomes linked. ie, the domain name and the hosting.

If you get stuck, ask here, we'll help explain whatever you need to know. As soon as you've taken this vital step towards an online presence, you'll never look back. Life will never be the same again

Hi freaky

Not sure if we've spoken in the past, but always good to see an old regular here on TNB. It sure is quiet on here compared to years gone past

I admit I'm not very good on mainstream sites. I have a few, but not good on getting traffic or paying customers. I keep building and investing in time and effort hoping they will become killer sites once the global recession becomes old news. I suspect my problem is that my mainstream sites deal in collectibles (antique adverts), thus when there's little spare cash, hobbies take an instant hit.

Och well, I have time on my side

Hi susan ... also try promoting the sites listed here ... stuff you cannot find FREE on the internet. Especially PHONE SEX ... no reason, without good SE listings you shouldn't be able to do $3-4,000.00 a month income on PS. That's around my average with some months higher and some lower. Did have, a few months ago, an $8,200.00 month on people calling my 40-50 different fetish phonesex numbers. Best numbers are gay men, trannies, mature women, housewives, asian to start with.

Unless it's the wrong way to start out, I'm going to start my hopefully adult adventure off with free hosted galleries and sites, once I figure out that DNS direct thing they talk about.

Then when I get more knowledge try to build some whole sites with free content. (way down the path I know!)

My brain is getting to be like a washing machine on the spin cycle!

If I may ask, is that website in your tag a free hosted site?

You could junk all of that. it won't hurt to leave it in...but it's not going to help you.

You really should have this or similar at the very top:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"

Adjust your style accordingly:
<STYLE>
<!--a{TEXT-DECORATION:NONE}body {
background-image: url(/images/bg.jpg);
background-repeat: repeat};-->
</STYLE>

or have an external style sheet.
I'm now kinda thinking you are new to html, css, etc...if not disregard the rest.

If you are, you'd do yourself a huge favor by reading up on basic HTML

One of the more infamous:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/

but you could also Google - something like:

learn html

A lil bit of reading and practice time will be a great benefit. While reading through various articles...you'll also learn about FTP, and other webmastering essentials.

If I were just beginning in this business today, I'd think about following JerryB's advice, promote only what surfers can't get for free:

phone sex
sextoys
cams
.....to name a few.

Traditional porn, ( other than hard to find niches - as Mr. Ritto mentioned in another post ) - died long ago....it just hasn't stopped breathing quite yet.

You've come to the right place - Tom's board - tons of good advice here.

- It is imperative that you think your business strategy through - ( niches to market, how to marketing, traffic filtering etc )
before you begin...read alot and develop a good plan that fits today's environment. I don't mean to scare you.... - but this is like any other business - think it through...plan for the future of your business.

ohhhhhhhhh FTP..
google:

free ftp

I use an elderly version of WS_FTP...I love it....but it's no longer available. I'm sure others here can recommend one that they like.

The header of an html page is something I've never worried about, maybe I should, I don't know, which a possibly a clue as to how unimportant it is. Please someone correct me if I'm speaking bollox

So, here is the header from one of my most ever successful pages. Its been online for about 7 years and constantly gets around 1000 surfers a day.

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Crossdressing Shemale Sissies</TITLE>
<META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
</HEAD>
<BODY>
..... etc

And the footer? The last bit of html? Even simpler.

</BODY>
</HTML>

That's it.

The point I'm making here is that you shouldn't worry too much about your HTML coding. If it works, its good. And it will get better as time goes on. You'll learn the fancier stuff as and when you need. Whatever you do, do not get bogged down in the finer points of coding, its a waste of time at this very early stage in your new found hobby / possible career.

It should be said at this point that as an independent adult webmaster, you have to learn a lot of things. But you don't need to be an expert in any of them in order to succeed.

Have you any ideas as to what style of websites you want to create? Do you want to post an example url / address of something you like and we can point you in the right direction?

susan, RE: message #299857:

Yeah, go for it. Its never a good time to start in porn so you might as well start now.

I also use cyberwurx as a host and can vouch for them being a good company to work with.

Like every other kind of business, you need to make some decisions regarding what you are actually going to sell. If you are going to try and push just any old porn then you are bound to fail and end up making so few sales that you will give up pretty quick. I'd suggest you specialise in something. As as example, I specialise in crossdressing, adult pony, balloon porn, and the adult baby niches. Maybe you've not heard of some of these before

But thats the point. By picking an unusual niche (something to specialise in), your potential interested market may be quite small, but you also have very little competition from other webmasters.

To illustrate this, if you chose to specialise in big breasts, you might end up being 1 in 20,000 webmasters trying to get a sale. But by choosing a somewhat obscure niche to sell, let says midgets with big breasts, then you might be only 1 in 10 webmasters trying to sell that particular 'perversion'.

Thats the last time you'll ever see me using the 'perv' word, from now onwards its called a niche. And the list of possible niches is only limited by your imagination. If you can think of it, then its a sure thing that theres a bunch of people out there who get turned on by it - guarenteed.

There is a problem with picking out small micro niches. There has to be some paysites out there for you to send your potential customers to. When attempting to break into a new niche I used to spend at least a week researching the niche. This would help give me a feel of the potential interest, sources of niche specific traffic (interested surfers), and places where I can send my traffic to that will ultimately make me money.

If you havnt already picked a niche then I'd suggest this website to get some ideas and to also confirm there are at least a few paysites operating in the niche.

http://www.signbucksdaily.com/sites/list/

See the list on the left hand side? Up at the top there's a link that says 'Switch to detailed view'. Click it. Now you'll see more detailed lists. This is an excellent site to explore to get new niche ideas from, and to check that there are paysites promoting that niche.

You may be wondering why I keep going on about making sure there are paysites operating in the niche you've chosen. Lets say that in a couple of months time you've started a really popular blog thats getting lots of surfers coming to read your latest posts and see the sample pictures you've been posting on it. If your blog was about little red haired women who like stuffing bananas up their noses, where would you be able to send these surfers in order to make a sale?

Okay, thats enough from me for one day

Come back with lots and lots of questions. Anything you dont understand or is just plain confusing, ask.

I used this plan at Cyberwurx for years without any problems.

CW Starter
Shared virtual server
5GB data transfer
750MB disk space
5 unique IPs
$6.25/month

If you are bound and determined to sling porn go for it but realize that it is very difficult at this point in time and I wouldn't want to be starting now. I would try mainstream affiliate marketing or an ecommerce site.

I understand that to make a good profit I need a lot of learning and to eventially invest in the top companies all the real webmasters need.

Cyberwurx looks like a great place for webmasters who are experienced.

However right now until I get more experience their pricing is a bit steeper then I am looking for to start out with. I have been told by a few others that small hosting packages to start with should be around the ten dollar range.

Thank you for the recomendation, I bookmarked them for down the road, which I hope isn't to long.

I really appreciate your assistance.

Hi, I installed the free tgp script. I am very happy with it so far and all I have done is install it! Great instructions simple script.

My problem is, I load the admin.php page, and I can't log in. I assume the log-in info is what is written in settings.php, but when I try that it doesn't work.

Also, I did the info.php file to double check the server path and the closest thing to DOCUMENT_ROOT I found was DOC_ROOT, and it's local and master value were both "no value". Though I am sure the path is right as I have used it for other scripts.

I have double checked all info, is there something I missed?

Thanks for your time, the script has been the best I have tried so far, installation anyway, I look forward to using it!

Dandy ...good to see you again.
Long time!

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /

RewriteRule ^/category/abc.php$ http://www.domain.com/category2/A-B-C.php [R=301,L]

I used that one first...Maybe I got it from you. But it also shows the same Qstring as the other. So I tried the example shown in my orig. post....

I will have to do some more searching. I've tried a number of google searches....nothing seems to be touching on my specific problem - so far - ....unless - I may need to rewrite the whole .htaccess and start from scratch to accommodate.

This is the first time I've bumped into this problem. lol

Thanks for the input Dandy and great to see you.

Hey Jeff ,

this is my standard .htaccess for 301-redirects. Maybe it works for you, too.

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /

RewriteRule ^/category/abc.php$ http://www.domain.com/category2/A-B-C.php [R=301,L]

If that doesn't work maybe try a search for "remove query strings htaccess" in Google. There are plenty of results coming up, although I didn't have a closer look at them.

Hello TNB...hope everyone is well.

I have a bit of an .htaccess problem. It's actually more of a redirect problem really.

I have some old product links - ( actually category links )
that have changed. I of course want to redirect to the new cats.

The .htaccess ia also used for Mod_rewrite which works just fine.

Below, is a snippet in my .htaccess including the top portion:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /

Redirect 301 /category/abc.php http://www.domain.com/category2/A-B-C.php
Redirect 301 /category/xyz.php http://www.domain.com/category3/X-Y-Z.php

Now, the redirects actually do work.....but I get a query string at the end of the new url which looks like:

http://www.domain.com/category2/A-B-C.php?category=abc

NOTE, the string at the end is the old cat/page name, ( abc )....in non Mod_rewrite form.

I aonly found 1 post on some other chat board that was somewhat similar to this problem. Someone suggested putting the redirects ahead of the reWRITES....and whomever he replied to said it worked for him. When I switched them within the .htaccess....it did nothing.

Any suggestions?

i actually know someone who BUYS gasoline for a major chain. he shops around to find the lowest price...then does he pass the savings ON to the customer at the pump? uh...NO! they go for the biggest PROFIT "bang for the buck" they can. it SHOULD be illegal, but its not. what a scam!

and IF you believe the talking heads on the tee-vee...they lie! they SAY we're headed towards another recession. we NEVER WERE in a recession...we're in a depression - period.

i remember the days when you could spend 20 bucks at the grocery store and come out with HUGE brown paper bags of food. now, that 20 bucks won't even fill one of those new and tiny plastic grocery bags.

heck, you used to be able to take 25 cents and go to the picture show. you could watch the big screen, have popcorn, and soda pop...and still come home with a few cents. unless you stopped off at the drug store for candy.

i remember...i used to b*tch when bread was 10 cents a loaf...now its 2 bucks or over...sheesh!

Well, over here they DID drop - about 1 cent for one litre. When oil price goes up, they rise prices immediately. No matter - oil price wont go much lower than that - demand still exceeds supply, and it will get worse in years to come.

i'm pretty sure the day traders, however, were having a hayday! everybody was selling, watched both bloomberg and fox business news (2 different views)...with everybody selling. the day traders were probably kicking back and buying REALLY low...just to wait. i could be wrong, but that's what i'd have done...and see what happens on tuesday.

however, being broke (in the south)...i'm having a difficult time buying groceries. could be worse, tho.

actually, jeff, there have been several youtube videos of the moron pervs at the TSA in action. the most disturbing (actually on video), prior to this, was their groping of an 8 year old girl! its all WAY out of hand. the PROBLEM is people put up with it. we have become slaves and servants to tyrants. the government should fear the people...not the other way around.
