Google's Keyword Tool
An amazing free tool anyone can use
I posted some time ago that one area I thought Google Adwords was weak on was with the keyword tool it has for PPC webmasters. This tool was designed to help webmasters predict how many visitors they can expect once they get a page listed under a particular phrase. Overture's keyword tool is now famous in the world of the adult webmaster - http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ - as a way to instantly find out how popular a keyword or phrase is with the searching world. But in comparison Google's keyword tool was pretty lame.
But recently they updated this tool and made it work differently. The whole change was to do with some major changes in the way Google's PPC system worked. The upshot of it was that Google's keyword tool became an indispensible freebie that anyone out there can use. You don't need to be into PPC search engine marketing, this tool can apply to either people into SEO or just adult webmasters looking for new ideas. If you've not used it yet, the URL is - https://adwords.google.com/select/main
It's pretty simple to use. Just type a phrase into the big box on the top left of the screen and then hit 'Show matching queries and suggestions'. It does say 'Enter one keyword or phrase per line', and you can put more than one phrase in there, but I've found the best way to do it is to keep it simple and concentrate on one phrase at a time. So on the surface it works a lot like Overture's tool. Once you've hit the submit button, you'll get three different sets of results. (Ignore the blocks of text - as they really relate to Google's PPC engine). Here's a break down of the results you'll get and what they mean:
The column on the left: more specific suggestions.
Top right: Related phrases to consider.
Bottom right: Some additional phrases which may relate to your phrase.
If you're used to using other keyword suggestion tools like Overture or Wordtracker, you might feel a bit lost without the numbers that appear along side results on that tool. And it would have been handy if Google had decided to add the number of searches that each phrase gets each month. I can only guess that there's a good reason why they haven't done this. But don't let that put you off using this tool - it has some amazing applications in it's own right.
The main value I find for this tool is that it will get you thinking of phrases, or variations on the phrase you've chosen, which would be very difficult to come up with otherwise. It's about IDEAS. I read on one PPC search engine forum that some people were not happy with this tool because it made things too easy - and 'made keyword research obselete'. I don't think that's true, but it does take a lot of the hard work out of finding the kinds of phrase that could bring you traffic. Phrases that other webmasters might be overlooking.
Here's a run down of some of the things you'll find:
- Misspellings. For example if I search for anal sex, in column 3 I'll find:
anel sex
annal sex
anl sex
nal sex
anal seks
anaal sex
anale sex
So that's a decent tool in itself. If you're working PPC search engines or even free ones, getting some listings under those misspellings could be of value.
- Saying the same thing said in a different way:
anal fuck
anus sex
- Ideas for products you can sell in that niche / ideas for new sites:
anal sex pictures
anal sex stories
anal sex movies
guide to anal sex
anal sex tips
anal sex toys
- Niches you may not have thought of:
black anal sex
lesbian anal sex
mature anal sex
amateur anal sex
blonde anal sex
oral anal sex
ebony anal sex
indian anal sex
So this tool provides something different to Overture but complimentary in a way. Here's some other quick things I have found using this tool:
Apply what you learn on one phrase to another.
Each phrase suggestion it brings up can in turn be pasted into the box and searched on.
If you do want to get an idea of each phrase's popularity, paste it into Overture or preferably Wordtracker. With Wordtracker, try the EXACT search so you'll search on just that phrase.
Hope you get as much out of this tool as I have been. I think it's great.
