Google adwords basics tutorial

Your first advert

Written by Tom from Tom's Newbie Booster

The first thing I want to look at is getting set up with Google adwords select. I'm going to cover the basics today - how to use the system and how to get an account set up there.

For anyone new here, let's have a quick recap of what adwords select is.

Google - http://www.google.com is currently the biggest and best search engine on the web. If you've heard of Ebay, you can compare Google to Ebay in terms of success and popularity. We all know that it's possible to get pages listed in Google. You just make a page and then submit it here - http://www.google.com/addurl.html or let Google 'find it'. (Google looks around the web for pages it thinks it's surfers will like...) OR... you can buy your way into Google.

You buy your way into Google by using their advertising system which is called 'Adwords Select'. You put adverts on Google (which is free) and you pay Google for every surfer that comes from Google to your website or page. Go to Google now and search for "asian porn". Look to the right of the results page and check out those little boxes. You'll see something like this...

... Those are Google adwords ads. This is what we're going to set up.

First up, here's an important bookmark:

https://adwords.google.com/select/

You'll be visiting this page a lot as it's the main login page for adwords. It's the place where you come to start off a new advert, check your old ones, or get started. The two important areas here are the login box:

Which you'll use once you're set up with adwords. And the sign up button

...which we'll use now. Adwords is pretty cool because during the setup process, you get to create your first advert. That's what we're going to do now - but don't worry. It's not going to cost anything to play with this thing for now.

1) First step - CLICK on the signup button.

2) And this is the screen you'll see every time you want to make a new advert for Adwords. We've got to start off by telling Google some information about the advert we're going to create. Google adwords lets you specify which countries will see your advert, and which language your ad should be displayed under. Don't forget that Google has many different versions - http://c.asselin.free.fr/french/googleworldwide.htm - and is available around the world.

The easiest thing to do here is to choose 'all languages' and 'all countries'. And then click save and continue. Here's what this bit will look like:

3) Creating the advert.

The next screen you come to is a little bit more complicated. Remember when we did a search for "asian porn" and saw those little ads to the right of the page? Well here's where we're going to make an advert exactly like those ones. The adverts consist of the following:

- A title - which links to your website.
- 2 description lines - which are in a smaller font size.
- The link you want them to go to.
- The link that the surfers will see when they roll the mouse over the link.
(This last bit is the same as rollover mouse javascript that many porn sites use...)

Writing the advert is a huge part of success (or FAILURE!) with Google adwords. I'll write more on this later on. For now, let's just put a basic advert in there.

Here's what I've put in there.

Make your own basic advert up and put it in there. Pick one of your pages to put in the destination URL box at the bottom. You'll be able to see the advert take shape at the top of the left box as you type it.

When you've got the advert in here, press the 'Create ad and continue' button:

4) Picking keywords.

You'll now see your new advert as it will appear on Google. The next step is equally as important as writing your advert. We have to tell adwords which keywords this advert should be shown under. Again, think back to when we did a search for "asian porn" earlier on. Whoever made that advert told adwords that the ad should appear when people search for "asian porn". So the next step is to choose some keywords and phrases this advert should be listed under.

There's a number of links on this page - all of which are unhelpful. Google's own tool for finding keywords is actually pretty bad. The ONLY part of this page that we ever need to be concerned about is the following box and button:

OK, now go to this page:

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Many people will have used this tool before. This is the ideal tool to help you find phrases that your advert should appear under. There's help on using this tool here:

http://www.tomsnewbiebooster.com/overtures-keywords-tool.html

Also come up with some keywords yourself. Think what surfers out there would really be searching for. If you're making a site on asian women, think about things like "asian pics", "asian hardcore" and so on. Never add the "free" word in here. Remember that every click you get from Google will cost you money. This is important because you want to deter any surfer from clicking who is not interested in spending money with you. Avoid keywords and phrases which suggest that they won't have to pay.

You can add one phrase in here or many. Here's what I've added:

When you've added a bunch of keywords and phrases, click 'Save Keywords'.

5) Choosing how much we're willing to pay!

The next step is to choose how much you want to pay for every surfer that Google sends you. You can pay anything from 5 cents upwards to Google for each surfer. Here's a basic guide:

- Pay more per click to get your ad more exposure.
- Pay less per click to get less exposure to your ad.

For now, let's see how much traffic we can expect if we pay only 5 cents for every surfer that Google sends us. There's a lot of complex stuff on this page, but there's only one little part that's really important. Look for this part of the page:

And put USD in the first box, and 0.05 (5 cents) in the next box.

Click 'Calculate estimates' - which takes us onto the next screen.

Google now calculates some statistics based on the price we've just put in. The table that appears should be pretty self explanatory, and you can spend some time looking at each phrase, and how much traffic Google thinks it will send you every day for this advert. This is actually a pretty accurate estimate - so check it out carefully. The most important part is:

Look for the total traffic you can expect - and how much it will cost you. These two figures are essential. You don't have to pay a lot per click to get traffic. A lot of people fall into that trap. For my 5 cents per click, I can get 52 surfers a day from this advert. It will cost my $2.56. OK - so let's assume we're happy with this and go to the next bit. Click on Save and Continue:

6) Confirm the ad.

You'll now hit another screen which looks a lot like the one we were just at. When this one pops up each time, just scroll down and click on 'Continue to step 3'. This part was easy!

7) The daily budget.

We hit another screen which again looks pretty similar. (Are ya sick of the sight of your own ad yet??!) Scroll all the way down this page and there's a tiny bit at the bottom that looks like this:

This is something for our benefit as advertisers. It's an upper cap on how much we will spend at Google each day. It lets you sleep at night because you could tell adwords that you only want to spend say 2 dollars per day on your advert. For now add in $5 as the amount and press 'Save and Continue' again. This amount can be changed later on.

And that's it! You've created your first advert for Google adwords select. If this is the very first time you've ever done this, you'll now have some additional screens which ask for your email, a password you'd like to use, and then some payment details.

Some other ideas I've got for Adwords tutorials are as follows:

- Editing and adding to campaigns
- writing ads
- landing pages
- rules and how to beat them
- making money with ppc

But that's about all you need to get up and running with your first advert.
